Power Plant Cleaning by Dry Ice Blasting
NRG Middletown, CT

You might be a natural gas and/or fuel oil fired plant operator and need a HRSG, fuel turbine, steam turbine, compressor or the inside of a lube oil tank cleaned.  If so, dry ice blasting is the best method of power plant cleaning available.

Dry ice blasting leaves behind no secondary waste stream.  There is no need to worry about abrasive blast media causing damage at a later time, dry ice is not abrasive.

Dry ice has no liquid state, it sublimates from a solid to a gas.  It does not promote corrosion.

Perhaps there is a generator scheduled to be overhauled at your plant or maybe an emergency repair is underway.  What ever the case is, dry ice blasting is the best and safest way to clean your generator.  The picture here shows the coils being dry ice blasted.

What?  How can the high velocity dry ice pellets impacting the fragile insulative coating not cause damage?

If you look close you see a deflector at the end of the nozzle. The angle of the deflector is not great enough to cause sublimation, but it is enough of an angle that when the pellets impact the deflector they break up into tiny particles.  The tiny particles are not heavy enough to penitrate the surface of the coating.  This technique makes power plant cleaning with dry ice blasting very desireable.  There are many sufaces in power plants that need a more delicate approach.

The picture at left shows a steam turbine case mating surface being stripped of baked on boiled linseed oil.

This job used to take many man hours of scraping with scrapers and scrubbing with abrasive pads using stripping solutions.  Great care was used not to scratch or gouge the surface.

Dry ice blasting gets the power plant cleaning job done in minutes, leaving the surface exactly as it was before the boiled linseed oil was applied.
